The past weekend saw the official launch of the Sun Meropa Hotel located in Polokwane. Boasting a Moroccan theme, the long awaited Sun International hotel forms part of the Sun Meropa Casino and Entertainment World, and is now officially open to the public. GH had the pleasure of sharing in the festivities as guests ripped up the dance floor and partied the night away.
Theme and Style
With the design team working tirelessly on a plan for luxurious accommodation for casino patrons, it wasn’t long before the idea of a Moroccan themed hotel was born. The idea was welcomed by the Limpopo Gambling Board and plans for its multi-million Rand construction were put into action. The end result was a magnificent hotel that almost perfectly depicts Moroccan culture whilst oozing in grandeur. Attention to detail was high on the priority list and the aesthetically pleasing décor consists of carefully selected items and patterns that create an enchanting ambience transcending one into a world of Arabian fantasy.
With 54 rooms and 6 luxurious suites there is enough room for all. Not limited to holiday makers, the entire establishment also caters for business events; its conference facilities (located at the Casino) are able to seat up to 600 delegates at a time.
The dining area is large and airy, and guests have the option of dining to the tranquil sound of flowing water emanating from an extremely well designed poolside.
Activities are plentiful and can be accessed via the beautifully landscaped gardens located at the far end of the Casino. For a small fee guests may visit the Reptile and Bird Park located within these gardens. The bird park is home to an assortment of raptor species where visitors are able to experience a ‘birds-eye’ view of these majestic creatures (no pun intended). In contrast, the Reptile Park boasts a multitude of different species of snakes together with a crocodile enclosure. Educational shows are hosted in a small sized amphitheatre where children are given the opportunity to handle a python.
A casino and hotel would be incomplete without a health and beauty spa and for this purpose guests may treat themselves to a day of pampering at the Mangwanani Boutique Spa which is also located in the gardens of the casino. With a signature treatment consistent with the Moroccan theme, this spa is not to be missed. (Click here for services and pricing)
Other sources of entertainment include a Go-Kart circuit- a rather popular attraction amongst children and adults alike, as well as a butterfly park which is currently under construction.
Staff and friendliness
With a friendly staff compliment, help is always at hand. A concierge service of highly trained and focused personnel can be found at the reception desk and are sure to serve all your needs. Well trained restaurant staff under the direction of an experienced Chef ensures that all meals are prepared on time, and in such a way that is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also delicious enough to tantalise the dullest of taste buds.
The hotel is simply majestic and without doubt unique in all its splendour. With a consistent Moroccan themed interior complemented by an ‘old fort’ styled exterior the Sun Meropa Hotel seamlessly balances the shift in paradigm. Coupled with highly trained and friendly staff; one would be forgiven for losing track of reality. A truly 5 star experience this hotel offers the comforts of luxurious accommodation at an affordable price.
